Walk & talk counselling in East Devon

I am a walk & talk trained therapist, and offer sessions at outdoor locations across East Devon.

Walk & talk counselling is a form of ecotherapy. One of the guiding principles is that connecting to nature is a therapeutic factor in improving mental and physical wellbeing.

Numerous research studies have shown that spending time in nature reduces stress and anxiety and deepens our connection to our environment and to ourselves.

As a passionate lover of the outdoors and avid cold water wild swimmer, it brings me great joy to be able to offer therapy outside as well as from the therapy room.

“There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature – the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”

FAQs

  • A person wearing brown hiking boots, burgundy pants, and a tan coat walking on a leaf-covered trail in a wooded area, with green foliage on the side.

What happens in a walk & talk session?

In a typical walk & talk session, we walk for 50 minutes along a pre-planned route. I will encourage you to observe the world around us, noticing aspects that stand out for you personally.

We may encounter adverse weather conditions, blockages to our path, unexpected aspects along the way.

We usually find that nature offers a striking metaphor for life’s challenges.

As we near the end of our walk and route, we start wrapping up our discussion points and reflect on our experience today.

  • Person floating in calm ocean water near pebbled shore with clear blue sky

Who is walk & talk suitable for?

Anyone who feels drawn to it…with a few health related caveats.

Walk & talk counselling is suitable for anyone with a decent level of fitness and physical ability - you must be able to walk comfortably for 50 minutes.

It’s also ideal for mums with a baby who they can bring along in the buggy.

Walk & talk counselling can work well for folks with neurodivergence who perhaps struggle with eye contact, enclosed spaces or the intimacy of the therapy room.

  • Woman walking with a stroller on a forest trail surrounded by lush green foliage and tall trees.

Can you bring your baby to walk & talk?

    Absolutely, yes you can.

I personally know how difficult it can be to get to a therapist’s rooms with a newborn in tow. The logistics of childcare or navigating feeds away from your babe can be too much, even if you desperately need to talk to someone.

Walk & talk counselling offers a unique opportunity for you to bring your baby in the buggy and still get the therapy you need, plus some exercise as well.

We can stop as needed along the way for feeds or changes and try to time the session in sync with baby’s nap or quiet time.
